The inaugural edition of the Lagos Country Club Tennis Festival served off on Tuesday, with over 100 participants jostling for honours over three weeks of scintillating display of tennis-playing skills.
According to captain of the club’s tennis section, Segun Aluko, eight categories would be competed for at the tournament sponsored by Etisalat.
The festival, with categories; Men’s Singles (classes ‘A’ and ‘B’), Men’s Doubles, Veterans’ Doubles, Women’s Doubles, U-18, U-12, U-10 and the U-8 class, has the makings to throw up a number of tennis stars for the present and the future.
All the junior categories are for boys and girls while the Ball Boys are not also left out, as they will compete at junior and senior levels.
“The Lagos Country Club is a family club and the objective is for bonding. That is why it is all encompassing, going by the categories absorbed.
“Also, this is about fitness and health. People need to exercise and keep fit, as a way to identify, nurture and build talents, seeing as some of the junior players are playing international tennis for Nigeria,” he stated.
Also, Aluko disclosed that the long-term vision of the club is to hold international events like the ATP in the near-future, seeing as it has the best clay courts in the country.
“This is the biggest event in the history of the tennis section and it is in line with our plan to bring top-class international tennis to Nigeria, as we look forward to taking advantage of our courts – the best clay court facilities in Nigeria.
The tournament will end on September 25.
