Defending champions Team Tombim are in pole position to qualify for the finals after nicking a 3 – 1 lead Saturday in the first semifinals of the NCC Tennis League against Team FCT at the Enugu Sports Club.
In a the Tie of two Abuja based teams, it was Team Tombim which got off to a winning start with national champion, Moses Michael besting Sunday Emmanuel of Team FCT in the first men’s singles 6-2, 7-5. Former national champion, Thomas Otu restored parity with a 2-6, 6-2, 5-2 rtd (retired) win over Christian Paul.
The women’s singles expectedly went the way of Team Tombim as former national champion Sarah Adegoke had two much for Osaremen Airhunwhunde who she beat 6-2, 6-1.
Both teams are already guaranteed N2 million but it appeared they had their sights at the N7 million top prize as they fought to win the men’s doubles – the last match of the day which may prove decisive. After the teams split two tiebreak sets, it was Team Tombim’s pair of Moses Michael and Christopher Edwards who nicked the point by edging Sunday Emmanuel and Taiwo Owolabi of Team FCT 6-7, 7-6, 10 -8.
Team Tombim now only needs to win one point from the two men’s reverse singles and the mixed doubles on Sunday to progress into the finals where they will meet the winner of the second semifinals between Team Civil Defence and Team Ofiikwu taking place at the Abuja National Stadium Saturday Dec. 10 and Sunday Dec. 11.
