A labourer working for the Church of Brethren in Nigeria also known as EYN was killed yesterday and five others wounded during a protest against the demolition of the church building in Maduganari area of Maiduguri metropolis by the Borno State Geographical Information Services (BOGIS).
An eye witness said, “They (BOGIS) came with a grader this morning and started destroying the church. The church is an out station of EYN Maduganari. We have been using canopies for the church until recently we decided to erect a building. So, we were working in the church when they came this morning and destroyed the building.
“We were not given prior notice. This is the fourth church being destroyed by the agency. One of the members of Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) who came with BOGIS shot and killed the labourer in the church, while five others sustained injuries as church members protested the demolition,” he said.
The chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Borno State Chapter, Bishop Mohammed Naga Williams, said he is still gathering information over the incident, adding that once he was done, he would brief the press.
When LEADERSHIP visited BOGIS, the executive secretary, Adam Bababe was not in the office.
At the State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, LEADERSHIP saw the corpse of the labourer inside a parked vehicle while the injured were receiving treatment at the Accident and Emergency Section of the hospital.
