We Are Disturbed About Our Battered Image – Governors

Published

Governors under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors Forum have expressed concern over their battered image in the country.

They observed  that something needs to be done to project the image of the governors in a more positive light.
Zamfara State governor and Chairman of the forum Abdulaziz Yari disclosed this to State House Correspondents after the forum meeting on Wednesday night.
“We also discussed how to handle the issue of image making of the governor’s forum. You know there have been issues most especially the bailout, the Paris club. We discussed how to make the governorship position something worth pursuing for our future generation.
“The way the image of governors are turned upside down, we are sincerely worried about it and something has to be done, Yari said.
On controversy surrounding the disbursement of the Paris Club and consultants dragging governors to court, he observed that it is because there is money involved as when there was no money nobody took the governors  to court.
He  further  explained that  now  the monies are there some are saying that they have been either shortchanged or not being paid accordingly.
“There are some issues that are in court and we are going to resolve them. But the issue of image making that we are talking about governors, we must believe that we as Nigerians, we governors are doing this leadership because of the mandate given to us and we have to be taken into confidence.
“It looks like those who are looking for the office are not doing justice to us, so it is important to protect our images, that of the forum and each and every governor. If you are looking for the office of the governor it does not mean you are going to and ridicule the office before you get there in.
” So it is something that we are all worried about. So we are going to do something about it. About the issue of transparency and fighting corruption we are all on board, we are not outside the system, what we discovered is that those outside are trying to ridicule the system before they get in.
On the outbreak of Meningitis which has claimed over 800 lives, Gov Yari said they  resolved to work together with the ministry of health as states to give other  own contribution.
“You know it is about the vaccine, logistics which our respective states are taking care of but the health minister will give us a detailed briefing at the NEC.”

It is surprising that the governors are looking for a may to improve their image when the cause of their not-very-enviable image is known to all, even ‘common’ citizens. Why should there be a good number of former governors with cases at the EFCC? Why are a good number of governors more of monarchs than elected governors of a democratic dispensation? Can the governors tell us what remains of the functions of the state assemblies? One can go on and on, so what Gov. Yari is saying is to say the least surprising.
