Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC) was established in 2004 with the mandate to effectively manage and supervise all facilities in Abuja with a view to making Abuja city a beautiful and functioning one. The council was recently repositioned to be more effective in service delivery.
For the past two years, AMMC has been making efforts on the issue of time frame, submission of building plans, clearing and removal of all obstructions on the road corridors, removal of illegal structures and beautifying the city. The actions of the council had led to the removal of some illegal structures, imposition of fines and sanctions on developers. The council is currently tackling the issue of animal rearing and planting of crops in prohibited areas of the city.
The successful implementation of regulations which are aimed at guiding developers to comply with the FCT rules whenever they want to commence developments on their projects, were often met with stiff resistance and many other forms of challenges. Several court cases instituted against the council are indications that some developers felt aggrieved. However, despite these challenges, the council has continued to do its work diligently with a human face as directed by the FCT Minister, Malam Mohammed Musa Bello, in spite of a recent court pronouncement which allowed the removal of illegal structures to be carried out without notice being served to the developers.
Hajiya Safiya Umar, as the coordinator of the council, has been saddled with the responsibility of supervising the functioning of the various departments under the council. She is also concerned with the smooth implementation of all policy decisions of the council as well as directives given to her by both the FCTA Minister, Malam Mohammed and his active and able permanent secretary, Dr. Babatunde Ajakaiye. Both the minister and his permanent secretary are doing everything possible to assist and cooperate with the council towards implementing desired objectives.
The AMMC has been repositioned for effective delivery of service to the public and is now determined more than ever before to ensure that the city is kept clean and beautiful as envisaged since the FCT was created. The efforts of the council are being noticed through its activities across the territory which some analysts have said they are positive achievements since it was established.
The achievements of the council could easily be confirmed by any visitor to Abuja who could spare some few hours to go round in order to see things for himself or herself. A brief look around the Abuja city nowadays will prove to the visitor that things are now changing for the better as the streets are clean and almost wearing new looks. The efforts of the council to keep Abuja clean and admirable are paying off, as observed by some residents in an interview with this reporter recently.
Immediately she assumed duty, Hajiya Safiya had taken a hard look at what she met on the ground and produced her own work plan which she is now carefully implementing. Today, one can say that the morale of her staff is high. She has also put in place a work ethics and a deliberate capacity building programme for all categories of her staff to meet the challenges of modern administration and maintenance of a city like Abuja. The appointment of Safiya should therefore be seen as a big challenge to her career and already she is doing everything possible to prove to the whole world that she is determined to do her best.
Of recent, the council has taken determined steps to remove illegal structures and to ensure that residents do not plant crops or engage in rearing of animals in unapproved areas apart from making sure that AMMC guidelines and regulations concerning building plans were properly adhered to by developers.
The coordinator is a stickler for excellence and time. She always insists for things to be done properly and on time in all her deeds and pronouncements. She has no apology to offer to anybody on this issue. Since she assumed duties as the AMMC Coordinator in 2015, she has been doing her best in the discharge of her duties as could be witnessed within the city. She keeps her appointments promptly and always leads by example preferring that others should do the same. Hajiya Safiya does not suffer fools gladly. Hajiya Safiya is indeed a silent achiever as she has been enforcing the provisions of the Abuja master plan among others. She is also concerned with the Abuja greening programme.
