The European Union (EU) Ambassador to Nigeria, Mitchel Arrion, has said that the EU has no interest whatsoever to colonise the West African markets contrary to insinuations from certain stakeholders.
He stated this at the EU-Kaduna trade and investment seminar with relevant stakeholders in attendance.
According to him, “Let me state clearly that the EU has no interest to economically colonise the West African market (as sometimes I hear from the media or from uninformed stakeholders).”
He emphasised that pursuing such an objective would only increase poverty in the region, create instability and run counter all the development cooperation efforts that the EU have been pursuing for decades in West Africa.
“The EU’s main interest in West Africa, of which the European Partnership Agreement (EPA) is one of the instruments to ensure the prosperity, peace and security of the region.
“Today, EU and West Africa are facing common threats of terrorism and illegal migration, and there is an urgent need to address the root causes of poverty through job creation.
