Bauchi State governor, Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, has described as a mere cliché the reported rift between him and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.
He said it is the handiwork of political detractors whose past time is to create disagreements between leaders.
Abubakar told LEADERSHIP Weekend yesterday that he was, however, not surprised at the plot to cause bad blood between him and Dogara with an imaginary face off because politics in Nigeria has a history of pitching leaders against each other.
The governor said, “It is very true that some crooks and selfish politicians are bent on making it impossible for us to live in harmony and that is their stock in trade. They proffer even imaginary theories and continue to paint a picture of hell just to cash in and feast on the situation for their selfishness and survival. This is not only bad but also ungodly.
“However, it looks as though, that it is not new in our kind of politics. Indeed, it is very much happening in most if not in virtually all of our states in Nigeria. You see, history is a lesson. In our state of Bauchi, for example, one would recall in succession how bosom relationships went sour; Ajiya Adamu of blessed memory and the then Governor, Ahmadu Mu’azu; then Governor Mu’azu and the immediate past Governor Isa Yuguda; then Governor Yuguda and Senator Bala Mohammed.
“In fact, even Governor Isa Yuguda and Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara were never the best of friends up until in the last few weeks when we saw them together at Hon. Dogara’s public function in Dass where Mallam Isa Yuguda was, ironically, extolling the virtues of Hon. Dogara. Well, indeed, it is said that there is no permanent friend or foe in politics but, I honestly, think that was the height of deception”.
Governor Abubakar buttressed his position on the matter with a statement credited to Speaker Dogara himself, in which he admitted in a recent media interview that the perceived disagreement was not personal per se and that it was all about the provision of dividends of democracy to the people of Bauchi State.
He added that he was on the same page with Dogara on the provision of dividends of democracy, which his administration has been delivering to the people of the state through sheer prudence and in defiance of lean financial inflow.
He vowed to continue catering for the needs of the people of his state, even as he hinted that his mid-term score card was ready and that his administration had already commenced publication of its mid-term report sector by sector, including the management of the finances of the state in national newspapers.
He said as the father of the people of Bauchi State and as Hon. Dogara’s elder brother and senior colleague, he is conscious of the singular responsibility to chart and lead every cause that will shame the cynics and to make it work.
He continued: “For goodness sake, Hon. Dogara is a citizen of Bauchi State, a Barrister at Law, a member of our Party – the APC and is currently the number 4 citizen of Nigeria. By the same spate, I am his elder brother, a senior professional colleague, and under the APC and also by the special grace of the Almighty Allah, I am his Governor at home.
“By those qualifications therefore, I am very conscious of my singular responsibility to chart and lead every cause that will shame the cynics and to make it work”.
“I am sure, even in the show of respect to the respective public trust bestowed on us, and especially, for the overall common good and the benefit of our state, we will ultimately come to terms and put our heads together. It shall be done at home as a family and I believe; it is just a matter of time. Just watch”.
