Members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South League have apologised to former President Goodluck Jonathan over a recent comment credited to the Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson, that his six years as the president of the country was a wasted opportunity for the Niger Delta region.
A statement jointly signed by the chairman of the league, Barr Ariolu Tebidapa and his secreatary Mr Akpan Ibibio, described the statement as an attempt to ridicule the former president, considering his achievements nationwide.
The statement which described the recent comment by the governor as misrepresentation of facts, also noted that the league was surprised over such a comment.
The statement reads in part: “We were swept off our feet with shock in the wake of a recent comment credited to no other person than Governor Dickson, saying that “your six years at the President was a waste to the Niger Delta region.
“Those who has refused to invest the opportunity which you have given to them has failed to develop their states and cannot even pay salaries. They are the one today calling you names and blaming you for their failure even with the enormous resources at their disposal.
“Respectfully sir, we wish to use this medium to apologise to you on behalf of the Governor of Bayelsa State and to also plead with you as a leader and father not to join issues with him but rather forgive him as we have always known you for your large-hearted nature.’’
The statement reminded the Governor that the former President was the President of Nigeria and not a president of Niger Delta region.
It also noted that the Governor should blame himself rather than blaming the former President for his woos and invest in infrastructure for the state.
“Now that you are back home to settle accounts, we can see other governors giving good accounts of their stewardship, inviting you to commission projects and paying salaries up to date without complaints.
“As we all know, this period has never been the best of time for our party , so we should be mindful of black legs who may want to create further disaffection within the party in order to achieve their selfish agenda of selling our party to the ruling party at the centre,’’ it said.
The statement noted that as a great son of the region they cannot sit they cannot watch anyone insult the former president which has been described as a hero of Nigeria democracy and emulated by other African countries.
