BY DONATUS NADI, Lafia
Senator Abdullahi Adamu, representing Nasarawa West senatorial zone in the national assemble has lambasted north central governors for shunning the agricultural summit convened by Media Trust and the Nasarawa state government aimed at finding ways of developing better agricultural programmes to ensure food sufficiency and revenue\ generation in the zone.
Senator Adamu, who is the chairman senate committee on agriculture, expressed displeasure that leaders from the zone which has enormous agricultural potential yet wallows in despicable poverty could shun such a laudable platform to improve the lots of their people.
He stated this on Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the Daily Trust North Central and FCT Farmers Forum and Exhibition in collaboration with the Nasarawa state government on the theme Showcasing the potentials of the north central states and the FCT towards improving farmers productivity, in Lafia, the Nasarawa state capital.
He pointed out that “we cannot be said to be a government where our people are still applying the predatory system of agriculture where our women in the village are seen returning from farms in the evening with firewood on their heads and a children on their backs”.
“I am saddened to say that apart from the host governor, Umaru Tanko Al-makura who has encouraged Daily Trust, a private organization that targets to get the peasant farmers improve their productivity, the absence of governors from Benue,Plateau,Kogi,Kwara and Niger states who were not only absent but did not sent their representatives speaks volume of our lack of readiness as a government to improve agriculture for sufficient food security” he lamented.
According to him, if the country must realize economic growth, it means that farmers must be encouraged and until this truth is married by state governments to ensure food sufficiency, there lies a lot for the country to grow above the level of importation of foreign rice and as worst, vegetables.”
Senator Adamu encouraged the Daily Trust not to be discouraged with the kind of attendance witnessed but to forge ahead in contributing their quarter which has gone beyond news reportage into agricultural programmes .
