The Gombe State Government has called on its citizens to embrace a
World Bank-assisted project, Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, (NEWMAP), as it will bring about effective and enduring flood control measures to most parts of the State.
The state deputy Governor, Mr.  Charles Iliya who said this yesterday in Gombe during the launch of the project noted that under the initiative drainages around the state would be maintained all-year round by removing refuse and silt.
The deputy Governor who was represented by the state Commissioner of Environment and forest resources, Hajiya Saadatu Saad, said that the initiative was adopted because of the threat posed by blocked drainage channels which often led to excessive surface runoff, thereby causing flooding.
“Gombe State is facing numerous ecologicalproblems, especially those pertaining to gullies, desert encroachment and land degradation”
“It is, therefore, imperative for this administration to execute gully erosion-control projects across the state, including the clearing of drainages, which we are launching today.” He said.
According to her, the project is aimed at reducing the state’s vulnerability to soil erosion, restoring degraded lands and forests as well as improving the people’s livelihoods.
Speaking earlier the project coordinator of NEWMAP in the state, Mr. Bala Nayaya, disclosed that the state with the assistance of the world Bank will de-silt 8,361 sq metres of drainage channels in Gombe metropolis.
