Worried by the continued influx of people into the nation’s capital, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) said it will establish five secondary schools in parts of the territory this year, to cater for the increase in number of students’ enrolment.
Speaking during the 2017 FCT midterm press briefing in Abuja yesterday, acting director of administration and finance, education secretariat, Barr (Mrs.) Justina Avong Maimagani listed the new schools to include, GSS, Gwarimpa Estate; GSS, Gosa; GSS Giri; GSS Paikon Kore and GSS, Bukpe, adding that they have been scheduled to take off in September, 2017.
Maimagani disclosed that 117 private and public schools were screened for the 2017 accreditation exercise, while the sum of N33.5m was generated from the exercise, just as 60 schools were inspected for commencement of academic activities.
She revealed the secretariat is collaborating with the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) for the establishment of a Nigeria/Korea model school, worth about 15 million dollars, adding that this has translated into over N1bn, ploughed into the secretariat.
According to her, “Teachers for this school have been selected through a rigorous process and some have even gone off to Korea for further training. On completion, this school has the potential of being one of the best schools in the country.”
The acting director also disclosed that three schools have been chosen as pilot for the inclusive education scheme in FCT, adding that structures in the school will be remodeled to accommodate physically challenged learners.
She noted that the proliferation of unregistered special needs schools and centres has prompted the secretariat to develop the FCT guidelines for the operation of special needs centres and institutions.
According to her, the secretariat has begun offering unique consultancy services to parents of the physically challenged, just as it carries out advocacy campaigns for autism awareness in the territory.
