The Senate, yesterday, resolved to investigate the implementation of the Ogoni Clean-up project to address the environmental challenges faced by the people in the Niger Delta region.
LEADERSHIP recalls that the President Muhammadu Buhari- led administration had launched the cleanup campaign of the Ogoni land. The then minister of environment, Amina Mohammed had stressed that the project became necessary due to Buhari’s interest in the development of the Niger Delta region.
However, several months after it was launched, the project is yet to take off.
The Senate, yesterday, said the non commencement of the project has further depicted the ineptitude on the part of government to provide a healthy environment and stem the climate challenges faced by the people.
A motion on the matter, tagged “motion on World Environment Day” is seeking awareness and protection of the environment, was sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central).
Leading the debate,Senator Tinubu called on government at all levels to create a feasible framework for realization of the protection of environment with a view to safeguarding the health of the citizenry.
She lamented that in spite of the recent launch of the Ogoni Clean-up Campaign, it does appear that work has not commenced.
She further noted that the people of Ogoni were suffering serious environmental issues which has caused lack of food and impede social well-being of the people.
She observed critically that the main purpose of the Sustainable Development Goals is to ensure a clean environment, hygiene and urban development among others, and to combat climate change and its adverse effects.
Ruling on the motion, the Senate President Bukola Saraki directed the senate committee on environment to quickly commence investigation to unravel the causes of the delay and or non commencement of the Ogoni Clean-up project.
