The Lagos state government has denied allegations that it plans to censor the media based on its directive that media organisations operating in the state should register with the government.
Speaking at a one day training for the media, organised by the Journalists for Democratic Rights, (JODER) in partnership with Ford Foundation in Lagos, the state commissioner for information and strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde denied that the state government was thinking in that direction.
Ayorinde, in his remarks through the Director of Press in the ministry, Mrs. Toro Oladapo said there was an existing law to that effect.
According to him, the law has been there for about 36 years and that government is just reviewing it to make it meet the reality of time.
“It is not meant to censor the media, the law has been in existence, we see the media as worthy partners and we place advertisements with them and we need to collaborate and work together. We also need to collaborate with the Online publishers as well, so there is no ulterior motive there” the Commissioner pointed out.
Earlier, the executive director of JODER, Adewale Adeoye urged journalists to concentrate efforts on reporting of issues affecting the average Nigerian.
Adeoye, observed that diversity reporting with emphasis to humanitarian issues, minority and low class are not given the desired priority by the media thus making them more miserable.
He lamented the rising cases of crime in the state which is prompted by poverty.
“We have read with concern cases of kidnap, suicide among citizens and all of these are poverty induced” he noted and called on government to execute people oriented projected that will impact lives through job creation.”
