Members of a Vaccinating team of the Katsina State Primary Health Care Development Agency were yesterday morning in deep shock over a suspected female vaccnator, who prevented her children and her neighbours’ children from receiving Oral Polio Vaccines (OPVs) in Katsina metropolis.
The team was said to be conducting this July round of Immunization Plys Days (IPDs) at Arewa 1 ward in Katsina Local Government Council when the melo-drama occurred.Preliminary investigations by a team of Journalists Against Polio (JAP) monitoring the exercise in the Katsina State Capital revealed that the woman discouraged her family members, including her younger sister and friend from allowing immunization in their homes.
LEADERSHIP learnt that the said vaccinator is also believed to be a ” core group Volunteer Community Mobilizer (VCM)” in the ward.
Officials of the international development partner supporting the immunization in the state, who spoke on the incident on the condition of anonymity, disowned the woman, saying the agency has no VCM in Arewa1 as they promise to look into the matter and take appropriate action.
“Yeah, this organization (name withheld) has no VCM in Arewa 1. By the way, it’s going to be well attended to and action will be taken,” one of the officials assured, while thinking aloud that the problem could be one of the “team selection challenges.”
Members of JAP, who expressed shock over the incident, urged the relevant authorities to send the woman away immediately from the vaccinating team.
At the time of tnis report, only the households of the younger sister of the woman and her friend out of the five houses that initially rejected the immunization of their children were not immunized in the affected ward.
Efforts to reach the spokesman of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency proved abortive at press time.
