By Tope Fayehun,
Following the Supreme Court judgment on the leadership tussle that has rocked the Peoples Democratic Party in the last 14 months, the PDP governorship candidate in the last governorship election in Ondo State, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede (SAN) has described the Supreme Court judgment as an opportunity for genuine reconciliation
Jegede who noted that the judgment has brought a definitive end to the factionalisation within the party, said the party must “begin a process of genuine reconciliation and self-cleansing, healing and rebirth that will usher in a new season of hope and refreshing for our people.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Jegede who was a victim of the leadership crisis said, “although we were thrown up as sacrificial lamb through the long and tortuous journey, nevertheless we are glad that our fight and experience have since counted for institutional strength and wisdom for our party
“So many wavered at the possibility of redemption, through the processes in court we tested again the limits of a critical institution and an essential arm of government to safeguard our fledgling democracy and advance the ideals of our founding fathers to provide sound leadership for our people through participatory democracy that is hinged on the freedom of choice
“Today we are again vindicated through the highest court of the land, an event that brings a definitive end to the factionalisation within our great party, the People’s Democratic Party PDP, and begin a process of genuine reconciliation and self-cleansing, healing and rebirth that will usher in a new season of hope and refreshing for our people
“We have no regrets. I salute those founding leaders of the PDP who through the storm kept faith with the party and stayed the course to salvage what was almost becoming a sorry state of the imposing “PDP edifice”
“These leaders picked up the gauntlet and confronted with courage and tenacity the forces unleashed to bring about the destruction of the party in order to leave our people at the mercy of only one political party without the choice of any viable alternative
“This is an opportunity for genuine reconciliation and by this victory we are again confronted with a daunting task to re-engineer the PDP, first to win elections and more importantly to meet the aspirations of our people to lead quiet lives and inspire them to achieve their God given dreams.
“To lead our country away from the precipice and our people away from frustration. To chart a new path for economic recovery and a foreseeable route to self-fulfillment in a secure and stable political atmosphere.”
