Leadership Nigeria News Today

A group, PLAN International has announced its intention to invest in training of health care providers such as Doctors, Nurses, Community Health Extension Workers and Community Health Officers, in order to equip them with latest knowledge on care for women of reproductive age especially during pregnancy, child birth and post natal periods.

Speaking at the opening of a five days Stakeholders meeting in Abuja, Health Advisor, PLAN International Canada, Dr Aliya Bibi said existing quality of maternal and new-born care training packages do not include updated and current information on how to manage and treat maternal and neonatal health.

Bibi also said that the workshop was meant to effectively teach evidence base recommendations, develop practical skills, improve providers’ attitude towards health services and respect the rights of patients and above all change real practices positively.

Responding to questions from Journalists, PLAN Consultant, Prof Oladapo Olayemi who is s Gynaecologist at the University of Ibadan said the training will translate to reduction of maternal and neonatal deaths in Nigeria.

“One of the major problems in Nigeria is that women die a lot more than recorded in other countries of the world, so the Ministry of Health has decide that they will train people, healthcare workers in areas where they can prevent these deaths.

“So they made a manual, some documents on the training and those documents needs to be updated and are being reviewed today. PLAN AND FMOH is sponsoring the review. Haven done that the stakeholders will peruse and ensure what has been done are accurate and correct,” he added.
