Ortom Has No Snake Farm – Commissioner

Benue State commissioner for Agriculture and natural resources, James Anbua has dismissed allegations that the state governor Samuel Ortom is rearing snakes in one of his farms.

The commissioner, who denied the report in a chat with newsmen yesterday in his office said, snakes are alien to the citizens of the state, “So how can one rear such a farm in a state for what purpose?

He said, “All the crops produced in the state have value chain,  but I don’t know the the value of snakes to Benue farmers. As far as I am concerned, I don’t know anybody who rears snakes or has a snake farm in Nigeria talk more of Benue, for me anything that is associated with snake be it of any kind, is evil.

“I only read about snakes in literature but I don’t even think about rearing snakes as a farm, how do I go into rearing a farm that is of no benefit to my people, Benue state is known for its agriculture potentials of crops and citrus not a complex farming like snakes.”

According to Anbua, Governor Ortom is only rearing animals like snails, rabbit, grasscutter, traditional cattle but not snakes.

On the anchor borrowers scheme ,the  commissioner explained that beneficiaries have started receiving inputs, adding that the scheme will terminate on the second week of August.

Pointing out that dry season farming is alien to Benue farmers, he added that the ministry has embarked on massive sensitization and land development to enable farmers key into the project.
