56 Persons Feared Dead In Niger Boat Mishap

Fifty -six persons have been feared dead in a  boat mishap  along  Kiri village  in   Munya local government on  river Kaduna in  Niger State.

LEADERSHIP findings revealed that the victims were most petty traders and farmers from Kaduna state going to popular kwata market in Zumba , shiroro local government area of the state .

It was gathered that the mishap might have been caused by the heavy downpour through the day that made the level f the river to rise with   tide  that  easily turned over the boat already overloaded with wares to the popular the market….

It was learnt that the boat was carrying heavy loads and 60 passengers mostly women to the market and that only four of the victims were rescued alive while others were reportedly drowned in the river on few kilometers up stream shiroro dam.

The director general, Niger State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed Inga, told LEADERSHIP that the local divers and a team of search and rescue operation had been on the scene trying to recover the bodies of the victims.

He stated that the agency had always sensitised the riverine communities to stop overloading while traveling on rivers, especially during the raining season and to always wear live jackets as precautionary measures to forestall accidents like this.

While confirming that only four of the sixty persons on board were so far rescued alive , he stated that the casualties level iwas high and that most of the people affected were from Kaduna except two persons so far confirmed are from Niger state

When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer PPRO, Niger state command ASP Babalola Adewole disclosed that the command has already sent a team of Police marine to the area and was yet to get details of the accident.
