Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara yesterday issued a one-week ultimatum to chairmen whose committees have pending bills of about six months to submit them for scheduling for consideration in the committee of the whole.
The directive is in compliance with the provisions of the House standing rules and follows information revealing that over 150 bills are pending before some committees.
Speaking on it, the chairman, Rules and Business Committee, Hon Emmanuel Orker-Jev, who expressed worry at the backlog of bills due to be presented for consideration, noted that the rules of the House stipulates that any bill that remained at the committee level for up to six months should be referred to the Committee of the Whole for consideration.
Similarly, chairman of the committee on ethics and privileges, Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai called on the speaker to act on the matter to make such committees live up to their responsibilities.
