BY OLAJIDE FABAMISE, Lagos –
Lawmakers in the Lagos at the weekend urged President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure robust implementation of the 2018 budget size of 8.612 trillion, saying what is paramount is its performance and effects on ordinary Nigerians.
The lawmakers who spoke in separate interviews with LEADERSHIP in Lagos, however, expressed hope that the budget would impact positively on the masses.
According to them, the timely presentation of the budget implies that the president is desirous of enhancing living conditions of the citizens.
The Chairman, House Committee on Finance, Mr Yinka Ogundimu, who hailed President Buhari’s timely presentation of the budget estimate, said careful measures must be taken to ensure full implementation of the budget.
Ogundimu, representing Agege Constituency II at the Assembly said that serious attention should be given to development of non-oil sectors to stabilise the nation’s economy.
“We have not been having problem with the size and allocations in the budget; the major problem is the returning of the budget on time to the executives by the National Assembly as well as the implementation of the budget.
“Before we should talk about 2018 budget estimate, we should be able to look into the performance of the 2017 budget, how far have we gone? “What is the percentage of capital expenditure performance to the recurrent? We should look at how the budget has been able to affect the lives of Nigerians.
Also speaking, Honourable Abiodun Tobun, the Chairman, House Committee on Works and Infrastructure, who also commended the President, expressed hope that the budget would enhance the completion of ongoing projects.
