The Honorable Minister, Ministry of Youth & Sports Development Barr. Solomon Dalung has officially unveiled the new logo of athletics’ Federation of Nigeria. This event took place on the 16th of November, 2017 at Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe Hall, Nicon Luxury Area 11, Abuja, when he declared open the 1st annual General Congress of Athletic Federation of Nigeria.
The Minister who was joined at the congress by past Director Generals of the defunct National Sports Commission, President and stakeholders of the Federation, unveiled the new logo which replaces the old one that has been in use since 1944.
In his opening remark, he said that Athletics was the famous Federation of Sports in Nigeria which created enabling environment for the discovery of athletes in both primary, secondary institutions.
According to him, “Athletics can still re-launch itself and claim its position in the field of sports”. Nigerian’s he disclosed are still in their wildest imagination on what caused the declined of athletics more so as it has affected the performance and desired vision of the growing generation.
Barr. Dalung urged the Federation to bring up qualitative leadership that will enhance better performance in challenging field and track events. While addressing the board members, he reaffirmed that the country can be the economy hub of the world if they strategies in reorganizing their sports administration.
Furthermore, the minister advised them to respect leadership while urging their leaders to delegate responsibilities to persons that exhibit positive ideas that can effect changes in areas that will bring back the countries name to the medals table. He solicited for team work to enable them achieve their desired target and hence forth encourage training and seminars that will also help update technicalities of the game. Bar Solomon Dalung, unveiled a proposed hostel plan that has the capacity of fifty rooms which after completion at the National Stadium, will make Athletics Federation to be independent of the government.
President of the Athletic Federation Hon Ibrahim Shehu Gusau also in his opening remark, recalled his promise during his election to reconstruct the sport with six National Athletics Development Centres. Meanwhile, he disclosed that foundation of a centre has been laid in Ondo State while he looks forward to doing the same for middle and long distance project in Jos, Plateau State.
The president further said that each region of the nation, shall have such a centre. “It is our ambition to create fresh but very rewarding and upwardly mobile job opportunities for our coaches. We hope to train 240 new coaches in the next 18 months to meet the requirements of these centres.”
Speaking Hon. Ibrahim Guasu still disclosed the Federation’s intention to make millionaires out of athletes, coaches and the sports as well as make the Golden league and the National trails great money earning events before the end of the current season. Their federation according to him has the biggest market and potentials whose annual budget would contest other states budget.
However, the past Directors Generals of the defunct National Sports Commission present Dr. Amos Adamu, Chief Patrick Ekeji and Chief Gbenga Elegbeleye in their good will messages unanimously reminded the stakeholders that they are veterans of sport that gave a great name to the country through track and field. They pleaded with them to redeem the sport with their experience and support their leaders so as to achieve collective success. Athletics from their views is as important to them as football and has more chances of winning more medals in their sport.
