Reps Move To Halt Strikes In Tertiary Institutions

The House of Representatives said it would examine and address factors responsible for industrial actions in the nation’ s tertiary institutions.

The chairman,  House Committee on Higher Education,  Alh Aminu Suleiman gave the assurance while fielding questions from newsmen  at the University of Ilorin after inspecting all federal tertiary institutions in Kwara state.

Suleiman who led other committee members on the nationwide tour of the institutions,  said the purpose of the visit was to engage leadership of all tertiary institutions and find out the challenges militating  teaching and leaning process.

He said “ we are on nationwide tour of all the country’s federal tertiary institutions as provided for by law and our oversight function to engage with leadership of all the institutions and know the challenges militating against teaching and learning and confirm that what has been appropriated to education by the executive are utilized for its purpose”.

Suleiman added that the tour would allow the lawmakers to examine the evidences of the payments released for personnel, capital projects and overheads by the executive arm of government.

He said the amounts earmarked for education in the 2017 budget has not been fully implemented to the letter, pointing out that the lawmakers would scrutinize next year’s estimate submitted to the National Assembly by the President by subtracting and adding to the estimate.

Suleiman,however, assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would continue to engage in productive actions that would improve the system.

The chairman of the committee expressed satisfaction with the performances of the federal tertiary institutions in the state and commended the management of the University of Ilorin for executing critical projects and maintaining stable academic calendar for the past 17 years.
