A team from the National Universities Commission (NUC) Abuja has scoref the Benue State University College of Health Sciences A1, for the quality of facilities and learning, describing it as excellent.
The team led by Prof. Ibrahim Yakassai, which had earlier inspected facilities at the College of Health Sciences towards the accreditation of Surgery and Medicine as part of the mandatory accreditation of courses done once every three to five years, made their observations known during a courtesy visit to Governor, Samuel Ortom.
Prof Yakassai said the team made up of renown professors from different universities in the country were quite impressed by what they saw and their interaction with lecturers and students of the college and the teaching hospital.
The leader of the team who called on other states to learn from what is on the ground at the Benue State University stated that the buildings, laboratories and other structures were excellent while the teaching which is now students’ centred is second to none.
Responding, Governor Samuel Ortom who was represented by his deputy, Engr Benson Abounu thanked the accreditation team for doing a thorough job.
He assured the NUC and other Nigerians that the State government will do all that is necessary to maintain the high standard at the Teaching Hospital and the College of Health Sciences, adding that the country needs more medical professionals to take care of the growing population.
He called on the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to consider increasing the number of medical students that could be admitted by the College from the present 50, a request which the team said is justified given the facilities and the array of medical brains available in the college.
The team was accompanied on the visit by the Provost, Benue State Teaching Hospital, Prof. Simeon Adelani Adebisi and the chairman, Board of Governing Council, Benue state Polytechnic, Ugbokolo.
