$1bn ECA Fund: ALGON Backs FG, Dissociates Self From Ekiti LG Chairmen

The Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) has said it fully supports the approval of the $1billion from the Excess Crude Account to support the ongoing war against insurgency in the North East.

National president of the association, Gambo Tanko Kagara in a statement yesterday said the association supports the move because it would help ensure security and development in the zone and the country at large.

Kagara also said the association was not a party to the stand of 16 local government chairmen from Ekiti State on the issue.

He said any chairmen or state not in agreement with the fund was not representing the association. According to him, the 16 local governments from Ekiti State acted on their own in dragging the federal government and the 36 state governors to court.

Recall that the 16 chairmen had approached the federal high court, Abuja to stop the release of the fund. The plaintiffs in the suit sought an order of injunction restraining “the federal government and the state governors, their agents, servants, privies, representatives in interest, howsoever called, from giving effect to the appropriation of the $1billion or any other sum whatsoever, from the Excess Crude Account of the federation as contained in the decision made on December 15, 2017 unless and by means of statutory allocation by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission.”
