The Kwara State police command yesterday confirmed the arrest of 10 persons in connection with the midnight attack on some worshippers along Ibrahim Taiwo road, Ilorin on the New Year’s Eve.

This is just as the state governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed condemned the action of the miscreants that carried out the attack, describing it as satanic.

Following the refusal of the community’s elders to grant them permission to hold a carnival party, some irate youths in Taiwo area of Ilorin vent their anger on some Christian and Muslim worshippers who were holding night vigil and prayers in the area.

Three persons were said to have sustained serious injuries while vehicles and other domestic properties worth millions of naira were destroyed during the mêlée.

Eyewitness said the Christian worshippers at Methodist Church and other churches in the area and Muslim faithful under the aegis of Quareeb Muslim Society of Nigeria that had their night vigil for the New Year at one of the secondary schools at Taiwo were seriously attacked by the youths.

The state police command in a statement by its spokesman, Ajayi Okasanmi said it has arrested 10 suspects in connection with the attack.

He stressed that, “It is important to note, that the attack has no religious undertone. It is simply an unlawful act by the disgruntled youths of the area, against the Christian and Muslim gatherings in the area”.

He noted further that, the state police command has commenced full investigations into the act adding that, anybody found culpable would face the full wrath of the law.

Governor Ahmed in a statement signed by his chief press secretary, Abdulwahaab Oba described the dastardly attack as criminal, satanic and alien to the state.

Ahmed, who commended those who made efforts to protect some of the victims regardless of their religious inclination,  called on security agencies to immediately launch investigation into the incident and unravel the perpetrators of the unholy act with a view to bringing the culprits to book.

According to the governor, “Peace is sine qua non for the development of any society and the government will not tolerate any act capable of breaching peace, unity and tranquility of the state”.

He called on the people of the state to imbibe spirit of tolerance and harmonious relationship for sustenance of growth and economic development in the state.

He also called on parents and guidance to monitor their wards with a view to curtailing their likely excesses.
