The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has concluded its initial health outreach programme in the four local government areas that make up Ogoniland in Rivers State.
The programme, which was held in Khana, Gokana, Tai and Eleme local government areas, was towards the Health Impact Study as recommended in the report of the United Nation’s Environment Programme (UNEP) on the polluted Ogoni environment.
Speaking during the conclusion of the outreach programme in Eleme, near Port Harcourt yesterday, HYPREP project coordinator, Dr. Marvin Dekil, commended the people of the four local government areas for their impressive turn-out during the period of the exercise.
Dekil stated that the outreach programme is a data gathering exercise and provision of healthcare services such as sicknesses, ailments, light surgeries dental issues and lots more to the people of Ogoni.
He said, “The outreach programme is an initial data gathering exercise as well as providing healthcare services to the people of the four local government areas in Ogoni.
“Sicknesses, ailments, light surgeries dental issues,eye challenges, respiratory issues and host of other health challenges were also attended to.
The project coordinator stated that HYPREP was established primarily to carry out remediation of the environment and to provide livelihood opportunities through skills training and development of youths and women in Ogoniland.
Dekil said, “HYPREP was established primarily to carry out remediation of the environment and to provide livelihood opportunities through skills training and development of youths and women in Ogoniland.
“The mandate of HYPREP is to remediate and restore the impacted land in Ogoniland. I have read reports that HYPREP is going to be sharing money. That information is not true, HYPREP was set up to implement the recommendations of the UNEP report.”
