A combined team of security operatives attached to the Military Task Force, code named Operation Delta Safe (ODS) have arrested the leader of the Militant group accused of beheading an officer of the Department of State Security and four other soldiers at Toru Ndoro Community òf Ekeremor Local Government Area òf Bayelsa State.
The arrested 28 years old Oyawerikumor Peregbabofa, known along the creeks as General Kareowei, was reportedly arrested on Wednesday night at his maternal home of Edegbene, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State by the Joint Military Task Force personnel.
Karaowei, described by sources as a warlord, notorious kidnapper and murderer, was said to be leading a gang of militants involved in abduction, sea robbery and other criminal activities in the area.
The military, LEADERSHIP Friday gathered, have been on his trail over his involvement in the beheading and killing of five personnel of the Joint Military Task Force. The mission was to dislodge and arrest the gang of notorious militants led by Karaowei.
While some of his kinsmen claimed the arrested militant contacted the Chairman of the Ekeremor Local Government Area, Hon Tolu Amatu on Tuesday with his declaration of his readiness to surrender himself and avoid the ongoing carnage allegedly carried out by the invading soldiers searching for him and members of his gang.
Others, particularly security personnel, claimed the wanted militant leader was arrested with severe bullet wounds alongside four members of his gang.
Confirming the development, the spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asimin Butswat, said though the suspect has been arrested, “the full details are not available immediately. “
A senior police source however confirmed that though the suspect sustained a gunshot injury, he is in custody of security operatives. The details shall be made available to the public at the appropriate time.
He also commended the Government of Bayelsa State for giving the requisite support to the security agencies in the fight against criminality in the water ways.
Furthermore, he called on the members of the nearby Toru Ndoro Community of Ekeremor Local Government Area of Delta State to return to their communities and continue their legitimate duties, “I want to warn that the security forces would not hesitate to move against anybody caught breaching the peace of the society.”
