Confusion is currently enveloping the nation’s only nautical academy, Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron over the recent appoint of the Governing Council of the Academy by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Recall that President Buhari had appointed Lagos-based politician and former Minister of State for Defence, Demola Seriki MAN Oron Board Chairman while the board members are Taiwo Tayo Ibitola, Hon. Garba Jiji and Sale Kuidawa.
President Buhari’s appointment is coming after the Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi in September 2017 inaugurated an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to join hands with the new Rector, Comdr. Duja Effedua (Rtd) to develop modalities for the restructuring and repositioning of the Academy.
The committee which was given were given six months had till March 2018 to complete its mandate. The members comprises of Chief Adebayo Sarumi, former managing director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) as chairman; Captain Isa Biu, former, Executive Secretary ,Nigerian Shippers’ Council NSC; Engr Olu Akinsoji, former Rector, MAN Oron, Engr. Greg Ogbeifun, Chairman, Starz Shipyard; a representative from Ministry of Transportation and Dr. Kelvin Okonna, Director MANCONSULT in the academy.
The two body, IMC and governing Board cannot work at the same time rather one have to exit the stage for the other to operate. But, it was still not clear to staff, students and host communities whether the IMC would round up its activities and hand over to the Governing Board or if the minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi will delay the inauguration of the Governing Board until the IMC concludes its operations in March 2018.
However, a top director in the Academy in a chat with LEADERSHIP said the staff and other stakeholders are waiting to see what will play out with the recent board appointment made by the President. The source said they hope reason will prevail on the IMC to step down since a constitutional recognised governing board has been appointed and waiting for inauguration.
