The Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, has secured the approval of his party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), to commence a statewide consultation over his aspiration to contest in the 2019 gubernatorial election in the state.
Agara sought the approval when he visited the party’s state secretariat in Lafia Tuesday, and got it after making his intention known to the party exco and loyalists who received him at the party’s secretariat.
The deputy governor said “Members from various local governments in this state urged us to take a giant step towards 2019. But as one that knows the party politics and one that is around, you dont just take such a decision in your bedroom.
“You have to step out and consult within and outside the state and i don’t want to be seen flocking the rules of the party. So i went to my ward in Gudi to consult with my ward chairman and his exco to seek their consent to step out for consultation and i got their consent.
“After the ward level, i met with other party excos including that of the zonal level and they all gave their blessings. My coming out here is not to kickstart campaign towards 2019. We are here to formally seek the consent of the party for us to move out to other local governments within the state.
“Because i don’t have the right to go to any other local government and meet with the party exco of such local government without the formal consent and support of the leadership of the party at the state level. That is our singular reason for coming here today,” He said.
He added “I want to make it clearly that Silas Agara is yet to declare for the governorship come 2019. That will be done after consultation with the party structure and stakeholders across the state. Once that is done, we will formally come back here and let you know what people said.”
While responding, the Chairman of APC in Nasarawa state, Phillip Tatari Shekwo, described Agara’s decision to pursue a statewide consultation before declaring as a clear hallmark of a leader with foresight and humility who wants to be sure of his party members view of his candidature before taking the next step.
“I want to say that your coming here today has shown your respect for the party. It is within my power. It is within my position to grant you this permission and it is so granted. You waited patiently when others came out early. You have shown unequalled loyalty,”
“I count myself lucky to have a group of qualified candidates vying for the gubernatorial post under our great party, APC. All the aspirants i have, each and one of them is qualified to be governor of Nasarawa state,” he said
