A Tiv pregnant woman was on Thursday hacked to death by suspected herdsmen in Orin-Ekiti in Ido/Osi Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

LEADERSHIP learnt that the killing was allegedly carried out in the early hours of Thursday by the local herdsmen often referred to as “Bororo herdsmen” at one of the town’s farm settlements.

The incident came barely 48 hours after the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose held a meeting with Fulani herdsmen under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, farmers, local hunters, security agencies and representatives of the Tiv community in the state.

There had been cold war between the herdsmen and farmers from Benue state, predominantly Tivs, in Ekiti over allegation of farm destruction and killing of a Fulani herdsmen, identified as Babuga Dengi, in a bush between Irele and Oke Ako in Ikole Local Government by people suspected to be from Benue over a week ago.

Commenting on the incident in a telephone chat with journalists, a former Chairman of Ido/Osi Local Government, Prince Sanmi Olubumo, who is an indigene of the town disclosed that another person was injured in the attack was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

Policemen from Ido-Ekiti Divisional Headquarters, according to Olubumo had visited the scene of the killing saying that the situation has been brought under control.

According to him, “The incident happened inside the Orin Farm Settlement. Nobody knows what led to the crisis in the early hours of Thursday but our people said the Bororo herdsmen killed the pregnant woman.”
