….FG Pledges To Prioritize Distance Learning Education
Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday in Abuja bagged a Doctorate Degree in Theology at the seventh convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
The Vice-Chancellor of the University, Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu, said in his address at the ceremony that Dr Obasanjo was among other notable Nigerians in the list of the 14,769 graduands in which 41 of them made first class honours.
Professor Abdalla listed other outstanding graduands which included one of NOUN Ambassadors, Chief Chika Okpala popularly known as Chief Zebrudaya Okorigwe Nwogbo alias 4.30 who was among the graduating Masters students.
He said the convocation marked the largest number of students so far graduated in the University while also commending Dr Obasanjo for his successful completion of a rigorous course.
“Our greatest pride, today however, is the graduation of our first phD student, and he is no less a person than His Excellency Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president and also a Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. His successful completion of a rigorous course of study and going through the numerous examination processes leading to ohD in Christian Theology and its confirmation by the University Senate on Thursday 11th January 2018 is his most powerful statement about lifelong education.
“His patience and perseverance in pursuing a doctorate degree program at his age, station and status in life, is a roadmap to all of us and clearly communicates three credos: you are never too old to learn, you are never too powerful to learn and you are never too full of learning.”
Meanwhile, the federal government has pledged to give due priority to provide quality university education to Nigeria including the Open and Distance Learning.
President Commander-in-Chief of Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari while congratulating the former president Obasanjo whom he referred as the Father of Open and Distance Education in Nigeria said his administration will continue to give the necessary support for educational development.
Represented by the executive secretary, National universities commission, professor Adamu Rasheed, he said: “My government will continue to accord the graduates of NOUN and those of other Distance Learning institutions in Nigeria, due recognition to buttress the fact that they are not inferior to those of conventional universities.”
