No fewer than 30 inmates, mainly those imprisoned over minor offences and debt related cases, regained their freedom in Funtua Prison, Katsina State, over the weekend.
Wife of the state governor, Hadiza Aminu Bello Masari, secured the release of the inmates after settling their fines as part of her humanitarian services to people of Katsina and beyond.
At the event, she admonished the freed prisoners to desist from any act capable of either endangering the lives or property of others or leading them back to jail.
Masari however pleaded with other well meaning members of the public to help in securing the release of more repentant inmates with minor cases, while expressing concern over the plights of the affected convicts.
In his remarks, the Comptroller of the prison, Lawal Idris Gusau, commended the governor’s wife over her kind gesture and called for more support of the state government.
In another development, the women and youth empowerment scheme of the of the state government received a boost at the weekend as the wife of the state governor, Hajia Hadiza Aminu Masari, donated 250 sewing machines and assorted working materials to trainees that had undergone skills acquisition training at vocational centres in Musawa, Bakori and Faskari Local Government Areas of the state.
The governor, represented by the special adviser to the state governor on house of assembly matters, Rabiu Idris Funtua, said the gesture is to complement the various programmes of the government designed to enhance job creation and self reliance among women and youths in the state.
