Lagos Closes Case Against Ex-UNILAG Lecturer Arraigned For Rape



The Lagos State government yesterday closed its case against a former lecturer of the University of Lagos, Dr Afeez Baruwa, accused of raping an 18 – year- old admission seeker (name withheld ) before the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja.

The state closed its case against the former lecturer after calling four witnesses, made up of the complainant, her father, a medical doctor and the investigating police officer.

Baruwa, a father of two and a former part-time lecturer in the Department of Accounting in the University of Lagos, is facing a one count charge of rape brought against him by the state.

The former lecturer was accused to have raped the complainant at 9. 25 am on July 23, 2015 at the Faculty of Business, Administration annex building, Room 8, University of Lagos.

Baruwa , who was friend of the complainant’s father, was requested by the man to help his daughter secure admission into the institution The offence, according to the prosecutor, violated Section 258 of the Criminal Law of Justice, Laws of Lagos State 2011.

At the resumed hearing of the case on Tuesday, the prosecutor, Mrs. C .K. Tunji-Carrena informed the trial judge, Justice Josephine Oyefeso that the state is closing its case against Baruwa.

The lawyer said, “We have called all our witnesses and we are closing our case against the defendant.”

But the accused person, was unable to open his defence due to the absence of his counsel, Olanrewaju Ajanaku.

Based on the development Justice Oyefeso directed the accused person to ensure that he had a legal representation in court on the next date of adjournment.

Also Tunji-Carrena told the court that, “We will also write a letter to Mr. Ajanaku , the defendant ’s counsel , to ensure his attendance.”

Justice Oyefeso adjourned the case until April 18 .
