The Australian High Commission to Nigeria in partnership with the Australian Alumni Association of Nigeria, on Wednesday, donated ophthalmic equipment worth 20 million naira to Bwari General Hospital, in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to Mr. Paul Lehmann, the Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Australia has a long standing bilateral relationship with Nigeria, and that that was prompted his country to donate such high-capacity medical equipment to Bwari General Hospital in order to ease the treatment of eye infections and diseases in the hospital.
The equipment donated include Ante-Posterior Diameter Tester, Big Scan Bay, Table Top Tonometer, 20 Diopter Lens and other machines for detecting colour blindness and other eye-related diseases. The equipment which were received at the hospital in the first week of this month, were in perfect working condition, and were handed over to the hospital management by a former Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Matthew Newhaus.
Commending members of the Australian Alumni Association of Nigeria, Mr. Lehmann said that he was always excited when Nigerians who started in Australia go back to their home countries to apply the skills and knowledge they have acquired in a positive way to benefit their people.
He further said that the Australian High Commission has maintained a long-standing relationship with the management of the Bwari General Hospital and that the Medical Director of the hospital, Mr. Osagie Osayande, who is also an Australian alumnus, is of a very reliable character and has distinguished himself in practice.
He added that his country’s embassy considers on an annual basis, a number of applications for funding by Nigerian organizations, at the end of which funds are made available to the qualified applicants.
“Every year, we look at a range of applications for small grant projects and we try to spread those around Nigeria and look at where we can make impact, and to demonstrate what we can do cooperatively. We don’t pretend we can fund or solve all of Nigeria’s problems. It’s just something that we can do to encourage communities to work together,” said Lehmann.
Speaking to pressmen, Dr. Abdullahi Mohammed, Head of Medical Services who represented the Secretary, Health and Human Services of the FCT, Barr. Amanda Pam, appreciated the Australian High Commission for gifting the hospital with such high-capacity equipment and assured the High Commission that the hospital would make the best use of the equipment.
