Benue State Police command yesterday disclosed that two out of the four mobile policemen who were missing during gun duel with suspected herdsmen in Adzege village in Logo local government last Saturday have been rescued alive.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the Mobile Police Force deployed to maintain security at Azege community in Tombo council ward of Gaambe-Tiev Logo LGA, Benue State came under heavy attack by herdsmen in the area leading to the missing of four Mopol.
The attack witnessed the burning down of the Hilux Patrol vehicle attached to the operatives as the suspected Fulani herdsmen who came in three different groups were said to have ambushed the security operatives in order to capture them but were however not lucky this time as the trained Mobile personnel professionally took cover and defended themselves. Not happy by their inability to achieve their criminal mission, the militia herdsmen, our correspondent learnt, resorted to property destruction which included the burning down of a brand new patrol vehicle belonging to the police team.
Confirming the Saturday attack, in a statement, spokesman of the Benue State Police command, ASP Moses Yamu, said that the incident occurred in Adzege community in Logo local government area of the state on Saturday. “In furtherance of its confidence building strategy and strengthening its visibility, Police Mobile Force Teams conducted a robust patrol of Ayilamo in Logo LGA.
However, on their way back to their camps at about 1430 hours, came under attack of a fully armed group suspected to be herdsmen terrorists In the ensuing gun battle one of the police patrol caught fire.” Yamu who had earlier said efforts were ongoing to locate the whereabouts of four policemen who were not seen while headcount was conducted later disclosed to our correspondent that two of the missing policemen had been rescued alive while the other two were yet to be seen.
The PPRO said although, the chief of the area had hinted that all four of the missing policemen had been alive, the command was yet to physically see the other two at the time of this report adding that the casualty on the side of the herdsmen were still being ascertained. Recall that only last Thursday, three people were killed after suspected herdsmen attack seven people along Tsokwa Stream in Ayilamo, Logo Local government area of the state.
The Benue attack as gathered by our correspondent has taken different dimension now, as the attackers target streams where people go to get water in the morning and evening as well as security personnel.
