Following the Edo State government ban on night grazing, the Edo Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, disclosed that it has sent a bill on the prohibition of open grazing to the Edo State House Assembly for consideration and passage into law.
The State Party Chairman, Chief Dan Orbih , said the state government decision to ban night grazing was a clear indication that the government has declared the state as cattle colony.
Orbih who spoke at a press briefing in Benin City, Edo State said when the law is duly passed it would put an end to the incessant clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.
He said: “In the last few weeks, we have been seeking the position of Edo state government as it concerns herdsmen and farmers clashes across the state. EDSG has consistently and stubbornly refused to answer the very important question.
“In the face of the dangers faced by our farmers, EDSG announced a ban on night grazing, a policy many stakeholders condemned as inadequate and cosmetic.
“After several meetings with stakeholders, It has become imperative that Edo PDP make its position clear, unequivocal and unambiguous. Consequently, Edo PDP has prepared and presented a bill on the prohibition of open grazing to the Edo State House Assembly for consideration and passage into law.
“Our bill has been sent to the Edo state House of Assembly for consideration and passage into law. The law will prevent the destruction of farms and farm produce as well as protect lives and properties of farmers, their wives and children occasioned by open grazing.”
“The law will also protect the environment from degradation and pollution caused by open rearing and overgrazing of livestock. It will also optimize the use of land resources in the face of overstretched land and increasing population, as well as maintain a healthy food security arrangement” he said.
