Police Loss 9,028 Men ‎Yearly – IGP Idris

IG of Police Idris

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Ibrahim Idris, yesterday, revealed that ‎the Nigeria Police Force loss 9,028 men yearly to death, retirement and dismissal. The IGP, who made the disclosure at the monthly meeting with Commissioners of Police and above with the Minister of Interior, Abdulraman Dambazau,  said this was not commiserate with the yearly recruitment into the Force and hence, the shortage of manpower.
Lamenting further on the inadequacies of manpower, the IGP said Nigeria Police was far below the UN standard of one policeman to 400 persons despite the Federal Government’s approval for the recruitment of 6,000 policemen into the rank and file and 10,000 officers last year.He noted that currently, the 308, 000 police workforce was grossly inadequate for the effective policing of the more than 180 million people in the country, with a ratio of about one to 600 persons.
On the accusation of attachment of about 150, 000 policemen to private persons, the IGP said that the force would review it to ensure that policemen worked for the general public and not for the rich alone. He said that he had directed police commissioners and zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, to compile the number of policemen attached to individuals in the country. Recall  that President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2015 directed that police personnel attached to unauthorised and some prominent persons in the country be withdrawn and deployed to confront the security challenges in the nation.
