APC chieftain and former member of the house of representative, hon Paul Adah has appealed to the Buhari-led government to urgently resuscitate and put to use the Obudu dam project in Cross River State abandoned since 1999 for the benefit of the people.
Adah who spoke to newsmen on the current water situation facing Cross River state maintained that if put to use, the earth filled dam structured with a height of 15m, a total crest length of 425m with a capacity of 4.2million m3 would provide water for cross river and some part of Benue state and encouraged agricultural and other commercial activities within the two states and beyond.
According to the former commissioner in NNDC and an APC governorship aspirant for 2019 in Cross River, the dam which was commissioned in 1999 for irrigation and other activities had since been abandoned following a rainfall in July 2003 combined with release of excess water from Ladgo dam in Cameroon that damaged the spillway destroying over 200 houses.
The APC governorship hopeful while lamenting the perennial water problems in cross river state and its adjoining States explained further that the estimated cost of repairing the dam and the completion of irrigation works at the dam then was put at about N350m stating that a review of safety work in 2004 for immediate restoration of the spillway was estimated to cost N272million.
He disclosed that the Federal government had in July 2009 issued a tender for engineering supervision of remedial work on the dam including refurbishing or replacing hydro mechanical parts, electric installation at the dam.
The former federal law maker who lamented that obudu which is the nation tourist destination was fast losing its tourism value due to near absence of essential human needs such as portable water supply, irrigation for agric activities which is one of the cardinal programs of the present administration were lacking due to the dam project being abandoned.
“This is a project that would have help increase the revenue base of the federal government, improve on the lifestyle of the people, diversify the economic status of the federal and host state in particular and create jobs for the unemployed but unfortunately abandoned, the lawmaker lamented.
While appealing to the federal government to extended its new water policy towards ensuring the reactivation of the obudu dam, the APC chieftain called on Nigerians to turn out to be registered to enable them participate and vote APC in 2019.
