Young Tigers Wins 2017 AMAC Chairman’s Cup

The Young Tigers Football Club, Gwarinpa has emerged winner of the keenly contested 2017 Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) Chairman’s Cup football competition.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, AMAC chairman, Hon. Abdullahi Adamu Candido explained that the competition was meant to catch the youths when they are young.

Represented by the vice chairman of the council, Lawrence Onuchukwu, Candido stated that the football competition aims to produce grassroots sportsmen, who would be ambassadors to the council at both national and international levels.

He stated that sport is a unifying factor that binds people, irrespective of religious or ethnic differences, adding that the Nigeria needs to promote sportsmanship more, owing to the current threat to national unity.

“We wish to call on individuals, nongovernmental organisations and groups to join the government to build sports in the country and encourage youths’ participation in order to reduce crime rates and other social vices in the society,” he said

The council chairman further called on the youths in AMAC to embrace sports and showcase their talents, instead of idling away, due to lack of job.

In her welcome address, the head, department of education and social development, Mrs. Dinatu Joshua Tukura, said that the annual event is organised to foster unity, love peaceful coexistence among the people.

Dinatu added that the football competition aims to promote the game of football at the grassroots, just as she noted that the competition is an avenue for the council to identify talented players that would represent the country in the near future beginning from the national league division.

Also speaking, the coordinator of Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), Hon. Tanko Yamawo urged the youths to maintain the spirit of sportsmanship.

Yamawo called on corporate organisations in and within the council to sponsor local football to harness talents.

At the end of the competition, the Young Tigers FC of Gwarinpa trashed Karshi Hawks with one goal to nothing, while Unity Academy, Garki clinched third position after Karshi Hawks FC.
