Manchester City has it going great for themselves moving another step closer to get the Premier League title. The team created a number of records in their match against Chelsea beating them 1-0 at the Etihad stadium on Sunday.
The only goal in the match was scored by Bernardo Silva which gained his team 18 point gap and placed them on top of the division’s rankings. Guardiola and his men were quite aggressive having around 71% possession in the whole match and the whole team could be seen putting in their efforts. Chelsea was left to defend for itself without even being able to take a shot at the target remaining in their half for most of the time.
Now let’s talk about the records Manchester City created in the single match! To begin with, they made a new record in the Premier League with the highest number of successful passes completed during the game. Manchester completed a staggering 902 passes, which is the most any team could manage since Opta began keeping track of such data since 2003 – 2004 season.
City broke their own record of 844 passes back in October 2017 against West Bromwich. In the same month, they also completed 814 passes against Stoke propelling them to the fourth position among the top 5 highest achievements since data was compiled by Opta.
Prior to that, they had already made another record with 841 passes in 2011 against Stoke City. They also featured in the fifth position of the list with 825 successful passes against Bournemouth which they won by 4 goals in December 2017.
Ilkay Gundogan also created an individual record while the whole team contributed towards the win. He made a record for most touches, passes and successful passes in a single Premier League match. The German star was able to pass the ball successfully to another teammate 174 times playing against Chelsea. His record broke the one set by Yaya Toure, the Manchester City midfielder in December 2011 in a 3-0 win against Stoke City.
The young Oleksandr Zinchenko who joined as a left-back also moved to the fifth position of the list. He completed 147 successful passes in the game against Chelsea while making 163 touches on the ball. He is at the sixth position of the list where Gundogan ranks at the top with 181 touches.
Manchester City is closer to the title of the Premier League more than ever. Though they have created record for the most successful passes, they also made 975 unsuccessful passes against Chelsea. It is left to be seen if Man. City moves towards the unimaginable number of 1,000 passes in a single match and betters their own numbers!
Manchester City seems to be having a pretty good run this season – and who would have thought about that?
