Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, has taken bold decisions which have succeeded in turning around the fortunes of the Nigerian Army, thereby making it second to none in Africa according to some experts.
Similarly, the brave efforts of his men under his diligent supervision and direction has helped greatly in degrading the Boko Haram menace which people in the North Eastern part of the country has experienced in the past few years. As a professional soldier, Tukur and his lieutenants have left no stone unturned and are still doing whatever it takes to further bring the situation under control which obviously must have caused millions of innocent people sleepless nights for a long time.
It would be recalled that when Tukur was appointed into this sensitive position alongside another indigene of Borno State, Major General Babagana Monguno, (retired) as the National Security Adviser to Mr. President together with others like them, it became very clear that some tough professionals from Borno State who have proven their worth have been carefully selected and entrusted with very sensitive assignments. And so far they these people have not disappointed their own people. Rather, they have been able to justify the confidence reposed in them after they were carefully handpicked by President Buhari due to their track record of achievements.
A casual look at the armed forces now will reveal that apart from raising the morale of the entire soldiers Buratai who had embarked on a massive provision of infrastructure all over the place has also made efforts to ensure that army vehicles and other equipment were properly refurbished and put to use so as to facilitate the work of the soldiers. Though General Buratai’s benevolent actions had started many years ago his appointment as the chief of army staff, and his recent reappointment had brought about an unprecedented spate of activities in the army which has greatly and positively impacted on the activities of the entire army and even on the lives of the ordinary soldiers, who believe that General Buratai is a competent leader who is doing everything to carry them along in whatever is being done.
According to his colleagues, the Chief of Army Staff has endeared himself to them by proactive actions, his simple attitude to work and his philosophy that no contribution from any soldier is too small from whatever angle. Moreover, he encourages them to be innovative apart from creating conducive atmosphere which encourages the workforce to excel in whatever they are doing.
Information available has indicated that the COAS is not only keen to see that things are done properly but have always encouraged the workforce of all categories to do their best in whatever assignments they were given. Tukur according to his colleagues always encourage his workers especially the senior ones to explore new areas which will bring positive results to the army. He has also done a lot in the area of human capacity development. The soldiers believe that Tukur is not only a motivator and a performer but a leader who has succeeded in turning around the fortunes of the entire armed forces within the past few years.
Even though he is still a serving officer he has been rendering assistance to deserved people here and there. Tukur is also known as a very simple and a religious person who is always patient and respectful to elders. General Buratai though a brave soldier to the core is also a press-shy leader who usually prefers to work quietly without any publicity towards achieving set goals. He is an unassuming leader, compassionate and is loved by the people due to his kindness. His simplicity is perhaps his greatest asset and strength. He is also a very loyal and understanding individual.
