In an effort to meet up with its corporate social responsibilities, Texaco Nigeria Outer Shelf Limited (a Chevron company and her partners the Nigeria National Petroleum Company NNPC yesterday donated a E-library to the West African People Institute Calabar in Cross River State.
Manager policy Government and public Affairs (PGPA), Chevron Nigeria Ltd.Mr. Mike Kabi who represented the Director Deepwater and PSCS,Mr. Richard Kennedy at the commissioning/handing over of the hybrid library to the management of the West African Peoples Institute Calabar stated that the initiative was in furtherance with the company’s social investment programme to boast education in Nigeria.
He said that education being an aspect of life that unlocks the potential of youths and galvanizes them for progressive development stressing that it was on the basis of trying to strengthen the country’s educational sector that the company saw the need to contribute its quota towards development of education in the country.
He said,” this is why we are committed to supporting its development. Every year, hundreds of students including the visually impaired, benefit from the NNPC/CNL Scholarship awards.”
Kennedy maintained that apart from the e-library donated to various schools across the country and the west African peoples institute WAPI, the oil firm through Agbami parties have also instituted special educational scholarship programs in support of man power development in the country.
He said that that was achieved through targeted support for medical,nursing,laboratory sciences and engineering students adding that currently about 595 indigenes of Cross River State have benefited from the Agbami medical and Engineering professional scholarships(AMEPS).
Kennedy maintained that 66 indigenes of the state were beneficiaries of the Nigeria National Corporation NNPC/ CNL scholarship award adding that Chevron’s contribution to improving education includes the provision of educational facilities and equipment such as laboratories and research centres and facilities upgrade.
In his good will message Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River State commended gave the oil firms for donating the project WAPI under the company’s social investment programme.
Ayade who was being represented by the state commissioner for Education Hon. Godwin EttaH commended the oil firm for the project saying that the state government and people of Cross River state were happy with the kind gesture of the oil company.
The Governor stressed that in as much the affairs of Cross River are being managed by two professors, himself and his deputy Professor Ivara Esu, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar stated that the policy thrust of his administration was to take no nonsense with issues bothering on education.
Ayade stated that even in the present times when the economies of many governments at the federal and states levels seem to face a down turn, the education education sector is still being given a priority attention given the fact that they have the minds to developed the sector.
In his good will message, principal of WAPI college Mrs. Mercy Etim, while receiving documents of the hybrid library from management of the oil company said,”I am so happy that this is achieved under my administration as the principal of the school under a short period of time”.
However, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu the V The Obong of Calabar who is an alumnus of the West African Peoples Institute WAPI who is represented at the commissioner and handing over of the project by paramount Ruler of Odukpani Local Government Area of the state HRH Etim Otu hailed the oil firm for the project and assured that the project will be jealously guarded by his subjects.
