Gidan Makama Museum is one of the 32 Museums under the National Commission for Museums and Monuments in Nigeria. It is located in the heart of Kano, opposite the Emir’s Palace. Gidan Makama (Makama’s House) is both a National Monument and a Museum. It is known for its traditional architectural excellence with its outstanding historical and ethnographic collections on Kanawa civilisation and Hausa land in general. It was built in the 15th Century AD by Emir Abdullahi Burja, as residential complex for Rumfa, his grandson. Prince Rumfa was later appointed the Makaman Kano, Heir Apparent to the Emir.
This explains why the house is referred to as Gidan Makama, though some prefer to refer to the complex as Gidan Rumfa. When Rumfa moved to his new Palace, the subsequent Makamas continued to use the complex as their official residence, a situation that more or less persists today. The complex was split into three. The Western section houses the Museum, the central area is used by the Makama while the eastern section houses two educational Institutions, each with their own centre of focus. Galleries include the Zaure in the main entrance, with displays of traditional materials, city walls and maps of Kano, the history of statehood, Kano in the 19th century, the Civil War, economy, industry and music.
Northeast Braces For Another Round Of Winter Storm Cancellations
The Northeast area of United States, is dealing with the winter storm effects from a nor’easter, which has caused flight delays and cancellations. According to FlightAware.com, as of 9.30 am ET, more than 1, 450 flights were canceled across the United States within this week, including more than 800 departing and arriving flights at Boston’s Logan International Airport. Other airports dealing with delays and cancellations from the winter storm include Philadelphia International, Baltimore–Washington International, Ronald Reagan Washington National, New Jersey’s Newark Liberty International, New York’s LaGuardia and John F Kennedy International. The cancellations didn’t stop on Tuesday either, as Flight Aware reported that more than 130 additional flights had already been canceled for Wednesday.
Airlines are asking customers traveling to or from impacted airports to reach out to their carriers before heading to the facilities in the coming days. Carriers are waiving change fees and fare differences for impacted travelers that purchased tickets for travel on Tuesday or Wednesday, including major airlines such as American, JetBlue, Delta, Southwest, and United. In addition, Amtrak announced it would suspend service between Boston and New York City on Tuesday for the remainder of the day, due to inclement weather. Service will be restored pending improved conditions.
