Immunization: FG, Osun Govt, WHO, Tackle Measles



—-exceeds apportioned coverage

Osun State government in collaboration with the Federal government and World Health Organisation (WHO) have embarked on the immunisation of children from nine months to five years across the state.

At the flag off of the exercise in Osogbo, the governor Rauf Aregbesola, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs Grace Laoye-Tomori, charged parents to take advantage of the elaborate exercise.

According to him, no fewer than One million and two hundred thousand children under five years of age would be captured in the exercise.

Also speaking with newsmen as part of campaign for the immunization exercise, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Olasunkanmi Isamotu stated that the exercise that kicked off on the 1st of March, ends on the 13th of March 2018.

Isamotu who was represented by the Executive Secretary, State Primary Health Board, Dr Kayode Adebayo Ogunniyi noted the devastating effect of measles especially on children which to him informed the priority given to it among other killer diseases.

The Commissioner noted that the prevalence of the disease is declared epidemic when five cases are identified at a location because the disease is highly contagious.

He expressed the preparedness of Osun State government to tackle the menace of measles adding that all that is required to succeed in the exercise have been taken care of.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) representative Dr. Dolly Aminatu Yahaya while sensitizing the public assured them that there is no danger attached to the immunization.

She disclosed that enough trained personnel amounting to 1,030 team from the national level in addition to 206 teams from the State were recruited for the exercise.

Isamotu who appealed to health workers and proprietor of private schools in the state to cooperate so that the targeted coverage can be achieved allayed their fear on perceived side effect of the exercise.

Osun State was able to exceed it’s coverage even few days to the end of the exercise.

According to Dr. Isamotu, just like now, Osun State had in previous exercise exceeded it’s coverage due to grassroot mobilization and effective sensitization.
