Governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has received the interim report of the just concluded Lagos-Kano Economic and Investment Summit, with the hope that the report would assist the government in shaping her socio economic blue print for the overall development of the state..
This was contained in a Press Statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the government, Malam Abba Anwar and made available to LEADERSHIP Weekend yesterday in the state capital. The governor received the report amidst the Weekly State Executive Council, held at Council Chamber, Kano Government House.
The Governor alongside Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Usman and other top government functionaries, received the Summit Committee, led by Dr Shamsuddeen Usman.
Dr Usman revealed that the Summit was centrally aimed at collaborating between the two states to leverage on capabilities of the partnering states. He emphasised that.
“The Summit focused on governance, power, infrastructure, security, tourism, agriculture value chain, ease of doing business among others.”
He said, “Implementation of the Memoranda of Understanding have already started. On the other hand, the two State Houses of Assembly have since started making moves for another collaborative engagement between the two states.”
“We also recommended that each commissioner should collaborate with his counterpart from the other state, so as to perfect and strengthen all efforts spent at the Summit,” Usman urged.
The Committee, spearheaded by Economists of no mean standard, said there is need for the state government to look into the possibility of sponsoring another Summit on youth development and sensitisation
Governor Ganduje assured that government would fully support such idea for the development of the society.
The proposed youth summit would engage between 500 to 1,000 young men and women from across all the 44 local governments area councils of the state, in which they would be left on their own to organise it .
Ganduje said, “We are absolutely behind the proposed youth summit. We will always support it. We are behind it.” He maintained that, his government would always support genuine strengthening of the finest idea, as he put it.
The Governor urged all those who would be involved in the summit not to be partisan, insisting that, “We only need those that are not in any way, politically partisan. It goes beyond politics and should be maintained as such.”
Ganduje made it clear that the major problem of youth was unemployment, which he further assured that government would do its best to see that the problem becomes history amongst Kano youth.
“As a way of addressing that problem, we are providing an ultra modern skills acquisition centre worth N5 Billion. And will be furnished with modern equipment and qualified trainers. With that, I am assuring you that we will address unemployment issue drastically,” Ganduje says.
On the Lagos-Kano Economic Summit, the governor observed that there could be no improvement without economic development, insisting that, “…you cannot have political development without economic development. You cannot have social development and of course you cannot have any other development without economic development.”
He further stated that, “We have an economic summit that has been institutionalised. It will remain a yearly event. For your information, some of the recommendations given by the summit have already started
The summit, according to Ganduje, was important and as such, it has started giving the partnering states more sense of direction. He noted that governing any mega city in any part of the world isn’t an easy task.
“Governing a mega city is a great concern all over the world. Because we are so curios to walk in that direction, we think it is necessary to include our legislative bodies to be part of the this all-important effort.
“This is where we are bringing in legislative summit between the two states. Lagos-Kano Economic Summit is something we are holding on to very seriously,” encouraged Governor Ganduje.
