FG Seeks Transportation Policy In Nigeria

The Federal Government has highlighted the need for effective transport system police that will transform the Nigerian economy to modernised and accident free Nation.

This call was made in Abuja by the Honourable Minister of transportation Rt. Honourable Chibuike Amaechi, while delivering a speech at the maiden meeting of Nigerian Commissioners of Transportation.

This is even as the Chairman of state commissioners of transportation forum, Honourable Orman Eating stated that the forum is to usher in hamonised policies that will ensure a coordinated and standard system operation at the Federal level as well as the state level.

He said that some of the policies is to ensure that
multi taxation and illegal taxation is eradicated.

“we want to ensure that vehicles as well as commercial motor cycles are registered with numbers of operation operations so as to put to rest the multi taxation being experienced by commercial motorists”.

Amaechi, who was represented in the forum by the permanent secretary Minister of Transportation Saliu Zakari, said that the ministry, building on the earlier stakeholders conference held in Sokoto state last year is doing everything possible to collate contributions from critical stakeholders in policy formulation and to build a unified transportation policy in Nigeria.

He said that government before now has placed transportation on concurrent list of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended in 1999, which translates that states must take steps to develop their transportation system inline with the best practices.

“with this, I can tell you that the seamless transportation policy system is long overdue. With this we can say that the formation of this forum at this particular time is long laudable and commendable because it will help to achieve consensus in key areas of the development of the road transport subsector which the nation has locked hitherto.”

The minister however informed the gathering of the commissioners that there has been international collaborration on the type of transportation morsel at the Federal level and states.

According to him, “what I am saying in earnest, is that that the Senate is there to perform its constitutional duties at all times because that is why they are there to make laws.”

On the quick passenger of the bill, he said that what is delaying that quick passage of bill is usually due to grey areas that might infringe on the constitutional rights of other Nigerians.

“I do not think that Issues of National importance of this nature would not attract the accent of the presidency. Here we are talking of the policies that will put to rest some National irregularities such as bad transportation policy or non existence of it. I think that such bill if followed like the practice in other countries will wast no time here”.
