Senate Tasks FG On Rail Lines Standardization

Published

on

The Senate yesterday urged the federal government to include the Eastern and North Western rail lines in the ongoing Railway Standardization Programme. The Upper Chamber said the Makurdi-Wukari-Jalingo-Yola rail lines should also be standardised and be reflected in the 2018 Appropriation Bill for implementation.

According to the Senate,it is utterly worried that in spite of  the federal government’s rekindled determination to resuscitate the nation’s rail transport system, the rail lines are still in a deplorable condition and not operational.

To mitigate the situation, Senate said  the federal government should restore services on the Eastern and western rail lines which is currently out of use. The resolution of the Upper Chamber followed a motion on urgent need to include the Eastern rail lines, sponsored by Senator Victor C. Umeh (Anambra Central).

According to Umeh, the inclusiveness of the rail lines is the essence of governance in a democracy which is further buttressed by the provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) which categorically states in Section 15 Sub-sections 3(a) and 4.
