Reports from the police in Enugu, Benin, Gombe, Katsina, Oyo, Osun and Ogun states show that the police have recovered 4,200 Illegal firearms as part of the mop-up operations ordered by the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
Edo State Police Command said it has recovered 120 assorted firearms during a mop-up exercise that lasted one month.
It said five suspects were arrested during the exercise.
Firearms recovered include nine AK47 rifles, one K2 rifle, one Beretta rifle, one TO6 rifle, 15 pump action guns, seven single barrel guns, two double barrel guns, two cut to size guns, two English pistols, 23 locally made single barrel guns, 12 locally made single barrel pistols, six locally made double barrel guns, 38 Dane guns, 150 love cartridges and one G-3 rifle.
State Commissioner of Police, BabatundeKokumo, who presented the recovered weapons to newsmen at the police headquarters said the decision to mop-up firearms was in line with directives of the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.
Meanwhile, the Police Command in Gombe State, yesterday, said it had recovered 25 firearms from individuals in the state.
According to Mr ShinaOlukolu, the recovery is in compliance with the order by the Inspector-General of Police directing all formations to mop-up illegal arms nationwide.
Similarly, the Oyo State Police Command yesterday disclosed that it has mopped up arms and ammunition totalling 178 and 840 respectively in tandem with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Mr Ibrahim Idris.
The state commissioner of Police, AbiodunOdude, while displaying the prohibited items at the state police headquarters noted that the IGP had directed that all Nigerians in possession of firearms should give it to the police.
According to him, some of the prohibited items were seized from bandits, while others were surrendered by some people who were not licensed to carry arms.
“In total compliance with that directive therefore, the Oyo State Police Command embarked on aggressive mop-up and recovery of the aforesaid arms including ammunition.
“The exercise, though ongoing, has been very successful as a cache of such arms and ammunition was recovered from different parts of the state within a short period. Some of the arms were recovered during a mop-up exercise while others were recovered from armed bandits,” he said.
Giving the breakdown, he added that arms recovered during mop-up exercise were 29; arms recovered from armed bandits were 149; while total ammunition were 709.
He gave the total number of arms as 178 and ammunition as 840.
The CP also hinted that five more suspects had been arrested in connection with kidnapping and armed robbery in Igbeti, Igboho and other parts of OkeOgun area of the state.
He assured that the command would not rest on its oars until the affected places and other parts of the state were completely rid of armed bandits.
“In our quest to achieve this objective, we fervently solicit the unflinching support of the public and other sister agencies,” he said.
Also the Police Command in OsunState said it recovered 86 assorted firearms and 88 unexpended cartridges in the state. The state commissioner of Police, MrOlafimihanAdeoye, made the remark while addressing newsmen in Osogbo.
He said the firearms recovery was done in line with the directive of the Inspector General of Police that directed Nigerians to submit the weapons to the police.
He said though few of the firearms were submitted willingly to the police, most of them were recovered from the criminals. He said the weapons recovered included Dane guns, pistols (locally fabricated and automatic), automatic riffles (AK47, LARS, Pump-action) and other locally fabricated shotguns
