Actors have been told to develop some certain characters that would help to enhance and sustain them in the acting profession. This advice was given during a three- day capacity building workshop organized by the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) in collaboration with Pan African Film Consortium and Ojez Entertainment, in Lagos. Themed “The Refined Actor,” the event was organised by the AGN Lagos chapter to empower young actors on how to develop their skills and become professionals in the movie industry. Speaking at the event, the national president, AGN, Emeka Rollas, said “The refined actor is one who has developed, is subtle and elegant in the job.
To become a refined act, an actor must possess the innate quality and acquire the skills. I’m happy to see the young and upcoming actors and those just showing interest in acting. “For the young acts to remain relevant in the field, they need to have a résumé, create curriculum vitae (CV) for the number of movies they have featured in, burn them in a disk and use it to market yourself to any producer or movie director.” Rollas urged the young acts to acquire relevant education regarding the field, constantly hone their skills and keep developing themselves.
Chairman of AGN Lagos State chapter and convener, Don Pedro Aganbi speaking on the aim and his feelings on the outcome of the event, said, “One of our constitutional requirement is basically designed to build the capacity of our members and to ensure that they are well trained and acquainted with the latest techniques, skills and innovation in the Nigerian’s motion picture industry. So this was put together to ensure members and participants become better actors.” The workshop featured sections like monetisation, career counselling, entrepreneurship, funding, ethics and professionalism amongst others. Guest speakers and facilitators both from the movie industry and other nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) were present to educate the participants on how to forge ahead in the dynamic movie sector.
