In democratic system or any kind of governance, the qualities of sound, focused and purposeful leadership is acquired and nurtured by resolute and principled personalities. They are not inborn, as many would want us to believe.
The consistent nurturing and application of such noble leadership qualities is what will help the development of the society and raising the standard of governance.
Hon. Ahmed Abubakar Walama, the present commissioner for local government and community development in Gombe State exemplifies these qualities.
Walama, a loyal and committed chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, is a man of his words.
Today’s political leadership requires people with vast exposure laced with spices of versatile bureaucratic, managerial, organizational and operational skills.
Since the release of the 2019 general election timetable by the electoral umpire, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), politicians and electorates have been busy projecting their favourite candidates for the various political offices.
It is clear that many of the contenders for the various offices may not have what it takes to occupy such offices but are only leveraging on some advantages.
It is against this background that, the Gombe State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) needs to carefully select the person that picks their gubernatorial ticket in the state for the 2019 general election.
This is very important to sustain the enviable achievements of His Excellency Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo. If there is any candidate that can consolidate on Dankwambo’s achievements, it is Hon. Ahmed Abubakar Walama.
Having served as chairman of Dukku Local Government where he doubled as the chairman of the state chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and later till date, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development in Gombe State, apart from his long and intimidating credentials, he is the only candidate with the right connection not only from the PDP families but to the whole of the state in general that will earn the party the support it needs to retain the governorship seat.
He was part of the strategic team and instrumental to the amazing achievements of the present administration under the stewardship of Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo.
Being a politically astute and intellectually cerebral, Walama has not allowed grass to grow under his feet since his auspicious appointment as Commissioner having hit the ground running with laudable and foresighted policies and programs aimed at bringing rapid and fast-track infrastructural and economic development to the good people of the state in line with policies and strategies of the Talban Gombe administration in the state for the past seven years.
Governor Dankwambo could not have chosen a better and more reliable ally as Commissioner for Local Government and Community Development than the agrarian-oriented Walama as the latter is a grassroots politician to the core preferring to hang out and intermingle with the rural populace rather than poring over files in the comfort of an air-conditioned office in the state capital.
Indeed, the level of infrastructural development in the rural areas has been rather astounding under the Dankwambo’s watch and the highly trained stockbroker, Ahmed Walama has been a faithful apostle and proselytizer of the rural development agenda of the Talban Gombe’s regime.
Walama, a household name in the state, has been in torch with ordinary voters.
He has distinguished himself academically, so has he excelled in this professional and public service arena having worked at numerous high profile establishments and organizations which includes but not limited to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), National Fertilizer Company of Nigeria (NAFCON), Agro Nutrient and Chemicals Company Limited (ANCC), Finmal Finance Company Limited, and a host of others, and therefore he could be an easy sell for the PDP in the next election.
